Headlines - NSCDC owes 35,000 personnel poll allowance.

The Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps has yet to pay the allowances of its 35,000 personnel that were mobilised for special election duty in the Edo and Ondo governorship elections, weeks after the polls were concluded.

While 20,000 operatives participated in the governorship election in Edo State on September 28, 2016, 15,000 others were deployed in Ondo State for the governorship election on November 26.

For the Edo poll, the men and women, who were drawn from the NSCDC Special Weapon and Tactics unit, K9 and counter-terrorism units, among others, were deployed in all the 2,627 polling units and 192 wards across the state.

Checks indicated that the operatives mobilised for the Ondo poll, were drawn from Kogi, Edo, Osun, Kwara, Ekiti and Ogun states’ commands to complement their colleagues in Ondo for adequate coverage of the state.

The non-payment of the corps operatives is coming against the backdrop of the delay of allowances of 26,000 policemen deployed for the election in Ondo, some of who protested the unfair treatment meted to them by their superiors.

The Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, has however set up an investigation panel to probe the discrepancies behind the incident and recommend a template for payment of future allowances to policemen.

But the NSCDC Commandant-General, Abdullahi Muhammadu, blamed scarcity of funds for the delay in payment of the election allowances to his men.

Responding to questions from journalists on Wednesday in Abuja, shortly after decorating 10 newly-promoted officers, the CG said that the corps had applied to the Federal Government for the release of the funds, hinting that it might be paid soon.
